Swanage Carnival
Posted in Events on 07/27/2010 11:58 am by adminIt’s carnival time and FireBird are pleased to be playing Swanage Carnival again this year.
If you’ve not been before, this really is a great event, lasting a full week and covering such diverse entertainments as a full-on Carnival Parade, The Red Arrows, Fireworks and of course Live Music, for which Swanage is becoming well-known.
During the week, collections are made, the proceeds of which go to support local charities, a full list may be found here: http://www.swanagecarnival.com/goodcauses.aspx
Many of these organisations depend on charitable donations so the members of FireBird are pleased to donate time and performance to such a worthy cause.
This year, FireBird play on Sunday August 1st and will be taking to the stage at around 10pm, straight after the spectacular fireworks display.
We look forward to seeing as many as possible there and wish the Carnival Organisers every success for this extraordinary event.
Chicken Wire
Posted in Gig Reviews, Uncategorized on 07/26/2010 12:13 pm by adminEvery so often a gig comes along that really buzzes, everyone’s on a high and the evening goes in to that mental list of great gigs. But unfortunately the converse is sometimes true, a gig that gets filed in the memory bank for all the wrong reasons.
We call these Chicken Wire gigs, from the Blues Brother’s film. Read the rest of this entry »

The Print Room Bournemouth
Posted in Gig Reviews on 06/26/2010 03:58 pm by adminRestaurant, Function Venue, very posh indeed.
A cathedral-like space that stands in testimony to its former use as home to the presses that once produces the Bournemouth Evening Echo, the art deco grade II listed building that is the Print Room proved to be the venue for one of the most enjoyable functions FireBird have done to date. Sure, it’s work but it’s no bad thing to enjoy a gig (professionally of course) and the members and guests of the organisation holding the event were some of the liveliest and friendliest we’ve entertained.
Sound.
With a tiled floor, hard walls (one a huge window) and a very very high ceiling, as one would expect the ambience of the room surpasses the best Lexicon reverb unit (although it’s not as programmable). Volume levels were minimal to start with and still the sound crashed and echoed around this cavernous space. Things improved mightily when the audience, as one, left the tables and came to dance, where they stayed!
Lulworth Cove Inn
Posted in Pubs on 06/22/2010 11:27 pm by adminAs the name suggests, a live music pub (with good food too) in Lulworth Dorset.
A good venue for both band and audience, the bands play on a raised area just inside the door. You won’t need much volume here.
Masses of parking almost opposite, free after 7 or 8 in the evening.
The Spotted cow
Posted in Pubs on 06/22/2010 07:52 pm by adminBusy live music pub on Poole Quay.
The Spotted Cow consists of a main bar downstairs and a lesser-used bar/function room upstairs. Bands normally play downstairs in the window to the left of the entrance although they have been known to play at the other end.
The sound is very lively but when the pub fills up it improves with the addition of more volume. It’s a good venue for a band too, plenty of room and possible to see the whole pub, not just part of it.
